Poker Tips: Skills & Strategy

Basic poker strategy
Reading the game

To get better at poker, you're going to have to put the hours in and test yourself

You get out what you put in’ is a saying that’s as applicable to poker as it is to life itself. Poker is a time-intensive hobby that you constantly have to work at if you want to progress. It’s also a fluid game where optimal strategy is constantly shifting, and to maintain or find an edge you need to be fluid too.

Fortunately, these days you don’t have to put in the hard yards and play hundreds of hours of live poker in a bid to improve. With the internet on tap you can play thousands more hands a month and discuss them online with like-minded individuals across scores of forums. And then there’s the poker book bandwagon that many pro players have jumped on. Strategy books and articles are two-a-penny nowadays but there are still plenty worth reading. So get on the forums and get your reading glasses out if you want to improve your game and start reeling in the big bucks today!

Tip of the month

Don't focus on results

After playing (and losing) a hand that you played fine, have you ever thought to yourself ‘If only?’ If so, stop that right now. Thinking in this negative way is being results-orientated, something you should look to avoid. As Doyle Brunson says in the intro to TV show Poker After Dark, ‘Poker’s not about winning and losing, it’s about making the right decisions.’
