Hand history
Brunson v Reese

Doyle Brunson vs Chip Reese, 2006 WSOP – $50,000 H.O.R.S.E.

The inaugural $50,000 H.O.R .S.E. produced one of the strongest fields in poker history, as 143 players duked it out over five gruelling days.

It also included two of the best mixed game players ever in Doyle Brunson and Chip Reese, and it wasn’t long before they clashed at the final table...

Blinds: 10,000/20,000
Doyle Brunson: Q♥-Q♦
Chip Reese: K♦-K♣

LON MCEACHERN (ESPN commentator): Doyle Brunson now, with pocket Queens.

NORMAN CHAD (ESPN commentator): Hey, I could play well with pocket Queens. He gets them and everyone calls him a genius. Look, he doesn’t even know how much to bet...

LON MCEACHERN: Doyle knows exactly what he’s doing – he’ll raise it up to 70,000, three and a half times the big blind. To his friend Chip Reese, with pocket Kings.

NORMAN CHAD: Doyle, Chip’s got Kings. Doyle should know – they’ve played with each other for 30 years – but Doyle is getting up there in age after all.

LON MCEACHERN: Reese just makes the call.

NORMAN CHAD: Reese is going to slow-play his Kings. Let’s see how that works out for him. The flop: 2♣-3♥-7♠

DOYLE BRUNSON: 220

LON MCEACHERN: Doyle’s going to bet 220,000 with the Queens and three small cards on the board.

NORMAN CHAD: Okay, that’s a spot where a lot of younger players would have pushed all-in. The older players, though, are not as reckless and Doyle will wait and see what happens with his bet.

CHIP REESE: I’m going to raise it.

LON MCEACHERN: A raise from Chip Reese and he’s going to double it. He’s going to make it 440,000 total.

NORMAN CHAD: And Chip is playing this one coy – he’s raised the minimum.

LON MCEACHERN: Action back to Doyle.

NORMAN CHAD: Yeah, you happy now pops, huh? If you just looked to your left you’d see that Chip Reese has Kings.

LON MCEACHERN: How many years has he looked to his left and seen that?

NORMAN CHAD: Most people in Doyle’s position right here, they’d be calling for sure, probably raising.

DOYLE BRUNSON: I knew you had some kind of pair, I didn’t know which pair it was, so... Brunson mucks, accidentally exposing a Queen in the process.

CHIP REESE: Fold Queens?

NORMAN CHAD: Great read by Doyle!

CHIP REESE: Hell of a laydown brother.
