Forget Super Sunday, it was Deepstack Sunday in the Fourth Betfair Grand Prix with a total of 542 runners sitting down at the earlier kick-off time of 4pm, each with a whopping 5,000 chips in front of them.
It was time for some serious poker, with double points available for taking part, bounties, finishing positions, and of course the big one, PokerPlayer Mini-League points.
The lure of double points in Freeroll 5 attracted eight PokerPlayers, and some notable performances (for once).
HillyFish was the first departure, in 415th position, perhaps still suffering a (literal) hangover from exploits in midweek that saw him dealing a game at the Loose Cannon Club, before dealing with two bottles of sambuca.
In his own words: “I found myself sat directly to the left of Dudek, whose chips increased as mine disappeared. Over-invested in A-K and A-Q to no avail. With less than half my starting stack, holding 8-8 on a board of 4-4-6 I re-raised fredwardo all-in, who turned over 6-6.”
Next, a shock exit. Shafty78, reigning PokerPlayer Mini-League Champion, in a lowly 363rd. Shafty78 has been playing a lot of turbos recently and his doomed 'value-shove' on the turn with middle pair was perhaps a little hasty.
Then it was the turn of darklord5 to depart in 329th. Despite a tightish aggressive set-up, the only hands he could find were big and suited Aces. Some got paid, other missed flops spectactularly.
This meant there was no real momentum, and the chips began to drip away. There was a pocket pair of Fours, which got checked down all the way, after limping pre-flop, for a meagre win.
The end came with a button shove sitting on A-5 Clubs on a flop displaying two Clubs and two Queens which was called by MrMarshall. MrMarshall helpfully said in the chatbox he shouldn’t call, then flipped Aces. No club arrived to prolong darklord5’s tourney.
derbyred and KillHill fell next in 319th and 248th, both going in ahead, before coming out behind to a rivered gutshot and runner-runner flush respectively. KillHill’s exit was doubly painful, as it meant she lost a last longest bet with Dicey.
And so three PokerPayers were still left in. K_Unknown and Dicey went some time later in quick succession in 115th and 106th respectively. K_Unknown propsered early on after doubling up with Aces, but was unable to capitalise; while Dicey definitely had his game head on, but came a cropper running Tens into Aces.
So it was left to Dudek as the final PokerPlayer remaining to battle on. And battle on he did, all the way to 49th position when he was given the boot by PokerPlayer Forum legend Bainn.
This was by far and away Dudek’s finest Betfair Grand Prix peformance ever, and certainly his finest deep-stack moment.
As he put it himself: “I would say it was like a marathon, but I have actually completed marathons in less time than it took me to play in this tournament.”
Congrats to Dudek who banked a huge 18 points on the PokerPlayer Mini-League, taking him up to seventh place. While the double points saw K_Unknown shoot five points clear.
A big old slap on the back too to PeteBlow who won the whole sheebang, and an automatic qualifying slot for the Live Final, while Mavverick finished in second to claim a huge chunk of leaderboard points.
