Poker: Strategy

Tournament poker
In it to win it

It’s three-handed. Chip leader has 6,000, you have 4k, short-stack has 3.5k. Short-stack goes all-in. You are sure he has overcards like A-K. You have 5-5. It’s a coin flip. Should you call or play it safe? Payout is $50, $30, $20.

1. Play it safe
If you don’t take the coin flip, then over 100 sit&gos, your results look like this:
  • 90 times you come second = 90x$30= $2,700
  • Five times you end up in third = 5x$20 = $100
  • Five times you win = 5x$50= $250
Total winnings = $3,050

2. Risk it
Take the coin flip, winning half and losing half, your results may look like:
  • 50 times you end up in third = 50x$20 = $1,000
  • 20 times you come second = 20x$30 = $600
  • 30 times you win sit&go = 30x$50 = $1,500
Total winnings = $3,100

Conclusion
It’s a conservative win rate, and we still end up making more of a profit.
