Winning Secrets

What makes some casino gamblers so successful? InsideEdge's insider, Diamond Dealer, reveals their winning secrets

How better to reveal the secrets of successful casino gambling than to explain the winning characteristics of all the players I've seen legitimately clean out the house during my 20 years in the business? Just one problem, though - I'm hard pushed even to come up with three such players.

Sure, countless players have had lucky nights taking the casino for tens of thousands of pounds, but these are the exceptions that prove the rule - lucky streaks out of months or even years of steady losing. Even these so-called 'big winners' would usually be back the next day, eager to press what they thought would be a never-ending lucky streak. Needless to say, they ended up losing considerably more than they had won.

Nevertheless, let's look at the best players I have witnessed across the green baize and analyse what made them winners. One word of warning, though: it's not exactly easy to successfully imitate their methods!

1. Alf Garnett - 'The Trojan Tortoise'

STYLE: Cautious, placing little bets with modest wins that slowly add up over the year.

2. Mehmet - The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

STYLE: Looks for winning players to read which dealers are hot or not, and then goes to their tables.

3. Anna - The Jammy Dodger

STYLE: Disciplined fluke. A low roller who has the willpower to leave before the house can recover its losses.

4. Dave 'The Beard' - The Tax-Savvy Businessman

STYLE:If you win big or small, spend it on treats before you lose it all back to the casino.

Ten steps to becoming a Trojan Tortoise

The Trojan Tortoise school of casino gambling goes something like this:

1. Only ever buy in for the smallest of amounts. £5 or £10 will never get you written up on the inspectors’ table control sheets

2. Always wear dull clothing. ‘Alf’ preferred a beige jumper over a grey shirt, with brown or grey trousers

3. Wait until you find a decent game in progress, and watch to see whether the dealer is hot or cold. Alf stuck to blackjack or roulette

4. Strategy and card counting to at least a basic level are required. Bet small, increasing in a minor way

5. At the roulette table, only place five or so minimumstake chips per spin. My ‘Alf’ copied winning players or played opposite losing ones

6 Cash out whenever ‘the cage’ is busy. Smaller wins won’t get you noticed

7. Only play on a busy table

8. Set a time limit on your play – say 10pm

9. If you’re having no luck, go home. If you do get a lucky streak, use ‘the casino’s money’ to press

10. If you do have a losing session, move to a different dealer, at another table
